Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

Strong social and emotional skills allow us to thrive in life.

Here at inspired we recognise that Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is a vital process that helps individuals develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, and social skills, empowering them to navigate everyday interactions with confidence. For individuals with intellectual disabilities, SEL plays a crucial role in enhancing emotional regulation, improving social connections, and fostering independence. By learning to understand and manage their emotions, individuals can reduce anxiety, frustration, and stress while building meaningful relationships. SEL also supports the development of key life skills such as conflict resolution, self-advocacy, and decision-making, helping individuals engage more effectively in work, and community settings. Additionally, it promotes self-confidence by teaching individuals how to communicate their needs, recognise social cues, and handle challenges in a constructive way. Ultimately, incorporating SEL into daily life provides individuals with intellectual disabilities the tools they need to thrive, fostering greater inclusion, independence, and overall well-being.

At Inspired, our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) sessions are guided by five key domains. These domains help individuals develop essential life skills that promote emotional well-being, positive relationships, and independent decision-making.

1

Self-awareness

This domain focuses on understanding one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behaviour in different situations. It includes recognising personal strengths and areas for growth while building confidence and a strong sense of purpose.
2

Social Awareness

The ability to understand and empathise with others, including those from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. This includes recognising the emotions of others, understanding social norms, and identifying available supports within family, school, and community settings.
3

Self-Management

This skill involves effectively managing emotions, thoughts, and behaviours to achieve personal goals. It includes learning how to cope with stress, delay gratification, and stay motivated while developing a sense of personal responsibility and self-discipline.
4

Relationship Skills

The ability to build and maintain healthy and meaningful relationships with others. This includes effective communication, active listening, teamwork, problem-solving, and conflict resolution, as well as navigating different social settings with confidence and understanding.
5

Responsible Decision-Making

The ability to make thoughtful and ethical choices in a variety of situations. This includes considering the impact of decisions on oneself and others, understanding consequences, and making positive choices that support personal and social well-being.

By incorporating these five core domains into our SEL sessions at Inspired, we empower individuals with the skills they need to thrive in daily life, build meaningful connections, and develop greater independence.
